4th of July - Happy birthday without fireworks

Spending the 4th of July in Germany was definitely a doubtful question that went through the minds of the American (United States) students. The 4th of July is a favorite holiday for many in the United States. It is the celebration of U.S. independence. The celebration of all things American. Yet we were just a small group of Americans on a continent an entire ocean away. To start our celebration we were all out on the town on July 3. When midnight came we did a countdown and the DJ played a Happy Birthday song for the U.S. We were already starting to bring Germans into our celebration.

The next day we headed into town and started off supporting the American franchises that exist over here in Germany: Subway and Starbucks. Planning began for our celebration that night. Some of us just lounged around and hung out while, others went out and bought supply's with some fellow German students. Buying supplies would have been easy if there were just a Wal-Mart in Germany, but as we learned in class previously, Wal-Mart flopped in Germany. Nonetheless, we were able to find all the grilling supplys we needed and set off to have ourselves a BBQ in the park behind the school. We enjoyed steaks, hot dogs, and bratwurst (which were luckily a favorite that the U.S. shares with Germany). So with our German friends, we enjoyed a great BBQ with music and American style games. There was the damper of not being able to watch any fireworks over here in Germany, but some of us did see an amazing shooting star. We all made the best of what we had, and we were all able to still have a great time in our host country of Germany.
