Late Arrival Sunday Heidelberg Summer School

Well, after a long day of traveling.. we finally arrived in Germany! Anna and I arrived at LAX around 3pm on Saturday to check-in at United Airlines. We found out that our flight was delayed to San Fransisco which would make us miss our connection to Frankfurt, Germany. So after about an hour of standing at the check-in counter with the clerk, she found another flight to SanFran that would barely make our connection. So she booked that flight, and then found out that it also got delayed. So after searching for more flights, she said that she wouldnt be able to get us to Frankfurt until Tuesday (we were supposed to arrive on Sunday). Eventually she had to re-route our flights on other airlines for us to make it on Sunday. We were re-routed on Virgin Atlantic to London-Heathrow and with a connection to Frankfurt on Lufthansa. Although BOTH of these flights also got delayed by one hour from LAX and a half hour from London, they were at least nicer airlines with better food than United. We arrived in Frankfurt at about 10:30pm.
We got off the plane, dreading to wait in lines AGAIN and go through customs, but when we got to customs, there was no line, and getting through customs was a breeze- just a stamp on my passport and I was on my way. We retrieved our luggage from the turnstyle, Anna´s shampoo exploded in her bag, and we were off to search for our transport to Heidelberg. We walked around Frankfurt airport looking for our driver, although we did not know who we were looking for, and eventually found our pickup. One thing about the European airports is that they are nothing like LAX- they are laid back, people are calm, quiet, and it looks like your walking through Ceaser´s Palace in Vegas with all the marble, upscale restaurants and high end shops.
Our transport to Heidelberg took about 45 minutes by van. On the way Anna and I noticed that there were basically only three cars on the road: Mercedez-Benz, VW, and BMW. Oh, and Audi. We couldn´t see much out the windows because it was already dark, and it was raining. At one point the driver looked at my Rainbow Sandals and shook his head and said “wrong shoes”- but we wear sandals everywhere, as true Californians do . After a little disorientation on the driver´s part, we arrived at the Gasthaus, and were greeted by two German Students. The driver of the van started to speak in German to one of the students- all I heard was “flip flops” and they both shook their heads and laughed.
We were welcomed warmly by the German Students, Alex and Eugene. They helped us with our bags, and gave us our welcome packages and wasser. They explained how everything worked at the Gasthaus and showed us to our rooms. They were very helpful in answering our questions and making sure we had everything we needed. We thanked them for staying up so late to greet us (it was 1230am German time) and unloaded our things into the rooms. The Gasthaus rooms are really nice! It´s similar to a dorm room, but really clean, spacious, and we have a great view on the 7th floor!
Now to go get me some Abendessen!"
